But if I want the feeling I get from the Cave Story soundtrack, there’s a very limited Organya fanbase out there, so the original source is about my only option. If I want to remember the NES days, I can take my pick from the original classics, or I can listen to something with a similar feel composed by basically anyone who downloaded FamiTracker. There are times when I want to hear that sound. The developer created the sound system, “Organya”, from scratch. Sometimes you might get more straight synth stuff, like what you hear from Disasterpeace in Fez and Hyper Light Drifter. Play more than a few retro games and you’ll get used to hearing these categories.īut, Cave Story has a whole sound of its own-literally. You’ve got heavily arpeggiated chiptunes reminiscent of old Commodore systems or the demoscene sound. You’ve got music based on the NES or Game Boy sound chips. It wasn’t quite so obvious when the game first came out, but after more than a decade of playing retro-style indie games, it doesn’t quite fit the trends that have popped up. More often than that, though, I really just want to listen to the music.Īnd it’s not just that the soundtrack is great listening. More than 10 years after my first playthrough of the then-untranslated Doukutsu Monogatari, I still go back and play from time to time.
Seriously, it has a great range of style and emotion, and every track suits the section where you hear it. Sometimes mellow, sometimes driving, “Ocean Songs” was hailed as one of the three most important albums of 1998 by Rolling Stone. You’ll hear strings, pianos, and even a hint of gospel from the man who, just a few years earlier, excoriated religion in his music.Įllis’s regular band combines guitar, violin, and drums in a dynamic, improvisational instruments-only trio. So we've found a few of Nick Cave's best, from "The Proposition" and others, to give you some good listening at the end of the work week.Ĭave and regular collaborator, Warren Ellis, teamed up to create the slow, ballad-esque mix of whispers, cries, and violins that make up this soundtrackĬave kicked the drugs and dropped the grittier post-punk sound from his earlier albums and embraced a more clear-headed, melodic direction. Dark, pensive, and eminently listenable, it’s the perfect accompaniment to a rainy day, like quaaludes and chamomile tea. Cave blends classic Western elements with modern ideas and instruments to create a sound both rich and haunting. Like the film itself, the soundtrack is both familiar and refreshingly new.
Set in late 19th Century Australia and directed by John Hillcoat (who might claim it was his movie), you get the sweeping vistas and white-knuckle gun fights, only with kangaroos instead of rattlesnakes. With credit for both soundtrack and script, “Proposition” is very much Cave’s movie, a Western with a twist. Today, we’re focusing on the music from an excellent film he had more than a hand in, “ The Proposition.”
